You depend on your smile for so many things, and for it to meet your needs, your teeth need to be clean and healthy. During your regular checkups at Alpine Meadows Family Dental, our team will clean, floss and polish your teeth to preserve their health and appearance. This process removes plaque, tartar and stains, but this cleaning only affects your teeth above the gumline and is often all that is needed for patients who do not have oral health problems.
Procedure: Prophylaxis Versus Scaling and Root Planing
It is worth noting that plaque can accumulate below the gumline and on the roots of your teeth. This can cause your gums to swell, allowing more plaque to buildup, which can eventually lead to gum disease. At this point, our dentist may suggest scaling and root planing, also known as a deep cleaning. During this procedure, we will remove the plaque from below the gumline and gently clean and smooth the roots of your teeth, allowing them to re-form healthy attachments to the jaw. This treatment can slow or even prevent periodontal disease.
